![]() Just watch it, why don’t you? It’s just as funny now as it was upon release twelve years ago, and the never ending Russiagate debacle only adds prescience to the film's Cold War mindset. Think Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy crossed with Four Lions, and… you’re still pretty far away, actually. The Cohen Brothers’ star-studded farce Burn After Reading, however, aims its satire at the paranoid incompetence of so-called intelligence agencies, and the scheming dunces who fall foul of them in search of an easy dollar. Spy parodies tend to send-up the slickness of secret agents, the vanity of super villains and other Bond-inspired movie tropes. Keaton reflected toward the end of his life that he "was more proud of that picture than any I ever made." The General might be a comedy, but the way that it pitches an ordinary man into a dangerous political intrigue is pure spy thriller material, and Keaton's commitment to his own wildly dangerous stunts echoes in Tom Cruise's eye-boggling latter-day Mission: Impossible work. He gives chase in another loco, and a series of increasingly spectacular stunts and set pieces ensues. ![]() Desperate to sign up for the Confederates during the American Civil War to impress his beloved – yeah, not a tremendous decision – Keaton's train driver Johnnie finds himself spurned when he's turned down for service.īut then his other beloved, the locomotive The General, is stolen by Union spies. The spy just happens to be being played by the most gifted comic actor who ever lived. You've seen the bit where Buster Keaton bonks a railway sleeper out of the way with another railway sleeper watch the whole thing, though, and you'll see it's a proto-spy film. Robert Pattinson wears some lovely suits too. Whether it makes sense and what actually happens in the end is the wrong question to ask it's really a mega-budget attempt to invert blockbuster cinema at large. When Protagonist (yep) is recruited by a shadowy organisation which has the technology to manipulate time, he's tasked with taking out the villainous Sator who wants to save the world by turning it all backwards and destroying it. But with a little bit of distance, it all feels less like Nolan's audition for a Bond film – though there were definitely nods and winks here and there – and more like a genre-bending attempt to launch a sensation straight into your brain. (It was a deliberate artistic choice! Actually!!) Tenet was the first Christopher Nolan thinky-thriller to really split opinion. The release schedule knackered by the pandemic and everyone's ears were knackered from straining to hear what anyone's saying through the haze of noise and rumbling which permeates the whole thing.

The Tenth Doctor and Donna mistake Santa for a Roboform. The Ninth Doctor promised to take Dr Lenni Fisk's son to meet the "real Santa". This disbelief was dispelled when Fester caught a mouse, and he exclaimed that, in gratitude, he did believe in Santa. The next morning, Paul and Fester woke up early and went into the living room, and upon seeing the presents, Fester was sceptical that Santa had visited. ( PROSE: Party Like it's 1979) Santa also visited Paul, Jeremy, Panda, and Fester's home on Christmas Eve night, 2006, delivering presents. Paul knew that his Mam had done the hard work buying the presents, though he also started to doubt the existence of Santa when he saw a pile of presents ontop of his Mam's wardrobe. ( PROSE: The Man Who (Nearly) Killed Christmas) A solution was found involving a fleet of robot Santas and newly calculated, more stable wormholes. The Second Doctor warned Santa of a future where the toy workshop spanned over two thousand worlds and the fabric of space was being torn by his time looping. The First Doctor visited Santa Claus in his workshop and helped save Christmas. When confronting the Sixth Doctor while in his final incarnation, Astrolabus, an exiled Time Lord cartographer and astrologer who claimed to be "legend on a dozen worlds", said that Santa Claus had been one of the names given to him over the years, as well as El Diablo, Robin Hood and Zorro. ( TV: Last Christmas) According to one account, the reason most people believed him to be a myth was that Torchwood One was intentionally keeping the truth of his existence secret. ( AUDIO: Death in Blackpool) For instance, Clara Oswald ceased believing in him at age nine, dismissing him as a "fairy tale". Whether or not he was real, most adult human beings believed him to be fictitious. The Ministry of Insinuation were displeased that the idea of Father Christmas went viral. ( AUDIO: Better Watch Out, Fairytale of Salzburg)įather Christèmas of Faction Paradox claimed that the jolly character of Father Christmas was created by Ben Jonson in the early 17th century to mock Christèmas following a failed deal between the two. ( PROSE: Party Like it's 1979)Īccording to accounts where Santa Claus were merely a fictional character, this myth was believed to have been based on Saint Nicholas of Myra, a 4th century bishop from Asia Minor. ( COMIC: Holiday Special)Ī young Paul Magrs was once told by his aunts that Santa Claus made more than one annual trip, hence why they had presents to give to Paul a week prior to Christmas. He was distinguished by his red and white clothing, known as the Santa suit. ( COMIC: A Christmas Story) In order to deliver presents to all children in a single night, Santa used time loops and clones of himself. It used to be located at the North Pole, but due to the aeroplanes which began flying over it in the 20th century, it became very noisy, so he moved it to the Christmas-land. Santa maintained a workshop where he created toys. Much more information from Iris Wildthyme and the Claws of Santa needs to be added. The quake originally was believed to have occurred on the Laguna Salada Fault, which is about 60 kilometers (37 mi) to 80 km (50 mi) long and straddles the California–Baja California border. Most of the damage occurred in the twin cities of Mexicali and Calexico on the Mexico–United States border. In addition, the retained placenta could be considered as a diagnosis if the patient had a hemorrhage preceding the delivery of the placenta. Retained placenta is a condition that is clinically diagnosed when the placenta has failed to deliver spontaneously within 18 to 60 minutes after birth. Imaging revealed an intra-cavity soft tissue mass measuring 6.5 cm. Hysteroscopy with dilation and curettage was performed and showed fibrous bands covering a soft mass of products of conception, which was then evacuated. Two days later, the patient started to have spikes of fever. Both cavities were evacuated of products of conception. Two days later, the patient developed a fever and elevated inflammatory markers. Ultrasound-guided evacuation and curettage were done, and two endometrial cavities were noted. The retained placenta was removed manually under general anesthesia. A 2.5 kg infant was delivered by normal vaginal delivery, which was followed by active management of the third stage of labor. This patient, a 34-year-old pregnant female, was admitted at 32 weeks of gestation for a case of preterm labor with preterm premature rupture of membranes and bacterial vaginosis. In this paper, we report a patient with a delivery complicated by a retained placenta and postpartum fever. The retained placenta is a risk factor for postpartum fever. Retained placenta is clinically diagnosed when the placenta has failed to deliver within 18 to 60 minutes after birth. ![]() ![]() The same safeguards that prevent weirdoes from accessing your computer also prevent you from sharing your files. Raine’s story along with Lister’s should be told. “Learned by Heart” is a moving, entertaining read. (Lister wrote one-sixth of her diaries in code to hide from homophobic eyes.) “I love and only love the fairer sex and thus beloved by them in turn, my heart revolts from any love but theirs,” Lister wrote in a coded entry in her diary on Oct. “Because she looked into her heart and wrote about what she found there with unflinching precision,” Donoghue wrote in her “Guardian” essay. ![]() Lister had the sexual ethics of a bonobo, Donoghue continued, “lying to every lover as a matter of policy.” “There’s nothing noble about Anne Lister…,” Donoghue wrote of Lister in “The Guardian.” As Lister’s Barbara Stanwyck to Raine’s June Cleaver. Raine frequently comes across as loyal, passionate, but too needy and clingy. Unfortunately, as so often happens, Lister, the bad, outrageous girl, is far more interesting than Raine. And, that, sadly, Raine is writing from what is then called an “insane asylum.”Īs is evident from “The Pull of The Stars,” and her other historical novels, Donoghue has an unerring talent for creating fascinating tales out of true stories. It’s clear from this correspondence that Lister has (and will have) other lovers than Raine. “Learned by Heart” is heartbreaking because its chapters are intertwined with letters that Raine writes to Lister in 1815. ![]() One day, Lister and Raine, who call each other by their last names, alone in a church, conduct a marriage ceremony for themselves. Lister, known even at this young age for being too smart for her own good, is assigned to room with Raine - isolated from the other girls - in the tiny room they call “the Slope.” Donoghue skillfully illuminates how the girls’ friendship becomes sexual, passionate first love. When Lister arrives at the school, Raine’s world and personality are transformed. “She’s trained herself to wake at seven,” Donoghue writes, “just before the bell.” Aware of unspoken racial bias (against people who are part Indian and part English), she wants to blend in – to stay out of trouble in this school with its many rules. Prior to Lister’s arrival, Raine is mousy, rule abiding.īecause Raine’s from India, she sleeps alone in a small room. Raine arrives at the Manor School before Lister. ![]() Perhaps, for this reason, “Learned by Hand” focuses on Raine’s point of view. Through “Gentleman Jack” and her diaries (which are being digitalized), Lister, with her brilliance and charismatic personality, has become a queer culture icon. ![]() After her father and mother die, she’s left an orphan with a small inheritance. In an author’s note, Donoghue writes of a letter of Raine’s that refers to her as having “sprung from an illicit connection.” Another letter calls Raine a “lady of colour.” He and an Indian woman, whom he did not legally marry, had Raine. Her father, who was English, was a surgeon with the East India Company. Raine was born in Madras (now Chennai) in India. Much of the novel takes place in 1805-1806, when, at age 14 and 15, Lister and Raine were students at Miss Hargrave’s Manor School, a boarding school for girls in York. Raine is believed to have been Lister’s first lover. “Learned by Heart,” an intriguing historical novel by Emma Donoghue is based on the true story of the queer relationship of Lister and Eliza Raine.
